John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park

    April 20th, 2012

If you haven’t made it out downtown to check out the sculpture park then your missing out.  I was recently reminded of this picturesque field of greenery the other day when I drove by it at night.  Even though I’d been there numerous times during the day, it’s something completely different at night.  The lights lighting up the over-sized sculptures really helps illuminate how amazing they are and lends a surrealistic tone to them.  More information about the Pappajohn Sculpture Park can be found at the Des Moines Art Center, which is the organization that acts as curator for the park.

    80/35 Music Festival

    June 29th, 2010

This weekend marks the 2nd annual 80/35 music festival. Something that is quickly becoming a must see for music fans in the midwest. This two day event will feature live music acts from Des Moines, as well as bands across the nation.

Started by the Des Moines Music Coalition, the goal of 80/35 is to bring music lovers, musicians and people new to music all in one place.

80/35 has 3 stages this year. The Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield main stage, will feature acts including Modest Mouse, Spoon and local act, The Atudes. The other 2 stages, sponsored by Kum and Go and Mediacom will provide free musical entertainment for the crowds.

In addition to the great music that will be at the festival, 80/35 also features; kids booths, beer from Olde Maine Brewing Co. and a variety of other local restaurants, a natural living station, a Des Moines do more station for the YP’s in attendance and so much more.

80/35 is also still looking for volunteers. So, if you want a chance to see some great music, help out and do it all for free, make sure to volunteer.

80/35 is just one of the many reasons we love Des Moines. For more information on 80/35, or to sign up to volunteer check out their website: www.80-35.com
