Sunday there are more 80/35 activities, as well as the kick off the “Live At the Creek” summer concert series at Jordan Creek mall.  Featuring dueling pianos and Fireworks!  You can also enjoy music,  a wine & beer garden,  or watch the fireworks from the amphitheater or one of the five lakeside patio restaurants.

And if you’re looking for things to do on the actual 4th of July, some local communities will be having their celebrations too. Windsor Heights will have a fireworks show at 9:30 in Colby Park or West Des Moines has their’s as soon as dusk sets at the Blue Heron Lake.

Des Moines Arts Festival Hits Western Gateway Park

    June 23rd, 2011

It’s that time of the year in Des Moines where there is ALWAYS something to do, and this weekend is no exception.

Head down to the Western Gateway Park district this weekend and you’ll be just one of 200,000 people that will parouse artists from all over the country.

While celebrating the works of the local and national artists is one of main features of the festival, there is PLENTY more to do.

Almost all day, every day during the festival, you can watch an artists’ demonstration and get a behind the scene look at how their work is created. Check out the artist demonstration schedule to see when and where you can watch these artists work.

One highlight of the festival is the Emerging Iowa Artists Tent. This tent features the work of Iowa residents who are current (or recently graduated) students. This tent gives students the opportunity for these young artists to expose and sell their work to the public.

Another feature of the Des Moines Arts Festival that has gained a following the past couple years is the Interrobang film festival. This year, the festival will feature 52 films covering a variety of genres; from animation to silent to fantasy to foreign! For a full list of the featured films, check out the Interrobang website.

Art outreach is another integral part of the festival. Kids and adults alike have the opportunity to create their own works of art while at the festival too. Whether its a pet puppy, learning the art of fish printing, stress balls or crazy sunglasses. Thanks to  the generous sponsors that make this outreach possible, all attendees have the opportunity to leave with their own pieces of art.

Your ears also have a chance to enjoy some art during the festival. Throughout the weekend, festival goers can hear some great live music from bands including: Rebel Creek, Pictures of Then and The Envy Corps.

The most important thing to remember, is that the festival is happening rain or shine and there will be something for everyone!!

Whether it’s live music you want, a new piece of art for your collection, a chance to see a new film or if you even want a bite to eat. The Des Moines Arts Festival will most definitely have it.

The festival starts tomorrow at 11am and runs until Sunday evening at 5.

For a full list of events, details on where to park and a map of the festival, check out the Des Moines Arts Festival website.

    Summer Sports In Des Moines

    June 15th, 2011

Last time we talked about all the fun things Gray’s Lake has to offer you this summer.

Today, we’re going to talk about the sporting events Des Moines has to offer you.

Des Moines has a variety of sports teams that are not only fun to watch, but talented as well.

This summer you could check out the Iowa Cubs at Principal Park. With a t-shirt gun, hot dog gun, the 7th inning stretch, dirtiest car in the parking lot contest of lots of other action; a cubbies game is always a great way to spend some time outdoors. Whether it’s a Friday night or Sunday afternoon. Your next chance to see the boys play is June 21st, when they return from the road for a 13 home game stay!

If the NFL lockout has you bummed out and you’re needing some pigskin action; the Iowa Barnstormers can offer some great arena football relief. After a 7 year hiatus, the Barnstormers are back for another season of great football action at the Wells Fargo Arena. You can check out their next home game on the 18th!

If you’re looking for some European style football action, the Des Moines Menace is the team you want to see. The Menace has been Des Moines’ premier soccer team since 1992. All Menace games take place at Valley Stadium in West Des Moines. Your next chance to see these guys is this Saturday!

If you’re not one to watch and you’d rather join in, there’s opportunity for you still. Check out the list of summer leagues with the Des Moines Parks and Rec; they have softball, flag football, volleyball and more!

So whether you want to watch or play, Des Moines has the niche for your sports fix. So, grab some friends and get out there and enjoy the summer!
